Invasive species identified in our region
We wish to inform the community that the spiny water flea, an aquatic invasive species, has been detected in the Baskatong reservoir.
To date, the extent of its invasion remains uncertain.
What is the spiny cladoceran?
The spiny cladoceran is a 1cm to 1.5cm long zooplankton, almost invisible to the naked eye.
It poses a threat to local ecosystems by disrupting the food chain and competing with other species for resources.
Why is this a cause for concern?
Ecological impact
This species can unbalance the ecosystem by affecting aquatic fauna and impacting fishing quality.
Disruption of the food chain
The spiny water flea also feeds on zooplankton, depriving some fish species of their food.
What you can do
Take preventive action:
Monitor your equipment
If you're boating or fishing in the Baskatong reservoir, inspect and clean your equipment (boats, nets, fishing lines) to avoid spreading this species to other bodies of water.
In addition, perform the same procedure before introducing your boat into the Baskatong, to prevent the spread of other invasive species into the reservoir.
(such as blue-green algae, zebra mussels, etc.)
Don't move the water
Avoid transporting water from one lake or river to another.
(e.g. in your fish tank and boat hold) vigilance on the part of users is crucial to limit its spread.

Next steps
In the coming weeks, AFC will be sampling the water.
We are actively monitoring the situation in collaboration with aquatic biology experts (MELCCFP).
Ongoing studies will assess the extent of the invasion so that appropriate measures can be taken.
We will keep the community informed of any updates.
Please note that there is no danger to boaters or fish consumption.
